NAP consistency and citations
The least glamorous part of local visibility, and one of the easiest to get quietly wrong over years.
NAP consistency is the kind of thing that sounds too small to matter and then quietly costs a contractor visibility for years. This explains what it is, why it matters, and why it is one of the first things worth checking.
What a citation is
NAP stands for name, address or service area, and phone number. A citation is any place online that lists those details: your Google Business Profile, your website footer, directories, industry listings, social pages, old listings you forgot you created. Together they form the record search engines use to decide that your business is real, established, and located where it claims to be.
Why mismatches hurt
When those listings disagree, for example one says one city and another says a different one, or an old phone number lingers on a directory, it weakens trust in the data. Search engines are trying to confirm a single consistent identity. Conflicting information makes that harder and can hold back local ranking, not as a dramatic penalty but as a steady drag. The damage is invisible, which is exactly why it goes unfixed.
How it goes wrong quietly
No one sets out to create inconsistent listings. It happens over time. A number changes. A business moves or shifts to a service area. Someone creates a directory listing once and forgets it. A new profile spells the city differently than an old one. Years later there are a dozen versions of the truth scattered across the web and nobody noticed it happening. That is why an audit of what is actually out there is usually the first useful step.
What fixing it involves
Pick one canonical version of your name, service area, and phone number, then make every listing match it and keep them matching as things change. It is unglamorous, ongoing maintenance, not a one-time project, because new listings and changes appear over time. How we handle citation hygiene and keep it consistent is covered on the local SEO service page.
