Review the actual business before editing the profile

Use this checklist for an existing contractor profile. Record the current values, confirm them with the owner and keep track of changes Google has not accepted yet. If you need the concept first, read what Google Business Profile does. A checklist does not resolve access disputes or establish eligibility by itself.

  • Confirm the business controls the profile and can provide appropriate manager access. Resolve an ownership or verification problem before routine management.
  • Use the real-world business name. Put service and location details in the appropriate fields rather than adding search phrases to the name.
  • Choose categories that accurately describe the core business; additional categories need to describe actual services.
  • Check address display against how the business operates. A contractor who only visits customers should not display a home address as a customer-facing office.
  • Name actual service areas. Google allows up to 20 areas; filling every slot is not a goal.
  • Check the phone number and website link by opening them. Confirm who answers that number.
  • Confirm customer-facing and special hours. Do not infer 24-hour response from the fact that a website is always accessible.
  • Review services, description and attributes against confirmed business facts.
  • Use supplied photos with permission and enough context to identify actual work.
  • Check review responses and pending profile changes, and assign responsibility for future updates.

The name, category and representation checks follow Google’s business guidelines. The coverage/address checks follow Google’s service-area guidance. Platform guidance reviewed September 15, 2026.

Keep a simple correction record

For each issue, record the current value, confirmed replacement, who approved it and whether it is submitted, accepted or still pending. For example, an old phone number is a factual correction; a new service category needs confirmation that the business actually offers that service. Check the website and existing directories for the same mismatch.

Avoid turning the checklist into extra services

The NAP consistency guide covers correcting business identity across listings. The review-request guide explains asking customers for feedback. Those jobs differ from updating the profile and writing public replies. Do not screen customers for positive feedback or offer incentives; see Google’s content policy.

Decide whether the gap is one-time or recurring

An isolated correction does not automatically justify a monthly service. Recurring work needs a real owner, current material and a useful schedule. Airlocked Solutions’ GBP Management scope covers one accessible, verified profile; creation, recovery and verification disputes are outside the standard service. Local SEO includes GBP Management when the wider website and search work is appropriate.
